Reading Expectations
1st Grading Period
Your child will be receiving a grade based on the points of the books read and passed on Accelerated Reader (AR) for each quarter of the school year. Students will be expected to choose books at their Reading Level. Most students are reading at a 2.5 to 4 grade level. For the 1st grading period students will be given a goal (depending on their reading level) that they will need to reach at the end of each quarter.
Each week, students will need to fill out their Weekly Recording Sheet which will be located in their Reading folder. Please help them with this in the beginning so that they will have a good routine. It will need to be dated. Please time your child as they read and when they are finished, write down the number of minutes read and then initial so that I know that they did in fact read. They will need to read 20 minutes per night for 5 nights. This will be a total of 100 minutes per week. At the end of the week, please sign your name at the bottom. Older siblings should not sign this. This is for parents, guardians, or other adults in the household.
I know some of you may think that this reading amount is excessive, but it will hopefully benefit your child for the rest of their lives and prepare them for the remainder of their educational career. My goal is for my students to find books that they do not want to put down because they are enjoying them so much. Please encourage them to choose books that are on their level and that will challenge them. They should be choosing books on topics of things that interest them.
I will be sending an AR Student Report home every other Friday. This will show their scores for their books read. It will be located in their Friday Folder. Students are given a full week to read their books. If they choose a harder, thicker book, I will allow them 2 weeks if they need it and if they ask for permission. If they do not have their books read or it is clear that they have not read it, they will serve an After School Detention or Friday School.
*If you have any questions or concerns please contact me through e-mail.
Happy Reading!
